The Book of Kells is the most spectacular of a group of manuscripts created in Ireland and Northern Britain between the 7th and 10th centuries, a period when Irish monasticism was at the forefront of Christian culture. It is a lavishly decorated series of gospel manuscripts, created by monks at the monasteries of Kells and/or Iona - its exact origins being disputed. It is a masterpiece of medieval art painstakingly executed on vellum in iron and black carbon inks, and decorated with a wide variety of organic and mineral pigments.
